§274f–2 Grants Regarding Hospital Organ Donation Coordinators

Summary

The Secretary can give grants to qualified organ procurement organizations and hospitals to set up programs that coordinate organ donation work at eligible hospitals. The aim is to raise the organ donation rate at those hospitals. Eligible hospital — a hospital that does major trauma care, or a hospital (or group of hospitals) that serves at least 200,000 people. Grant programs must be run together by the hospital and the organ procurement organization, and by any other groups they pick. Each grant recipient must share leadership and responsibility, agree on project goals and measures (including interim targets), and set up data collection to track progress. Grants must not change rules in force on April 5, 2004. Within 3 years after a grant is given, the Secretary must evaluate whether donation rates went up. Recipients must provide non‑Federal help equal to at least 30% of the grant (cash or in kind). Funding authorized: $3,000,000 for fiscal year 2005, and whatever sums are needed for fiscal years 2006–2009.
