§274i Eligibility Requirements for Stephanie Tubbs Jones Gift of Life Medal

Summary

Any organ donor or the donor’s family can receive the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Gift of Life Medal if money is available and the rules are met. The Secretary of Health and Human Services tells the group that runs the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network to make an application process. The local organ procurement organization must send proof to that group. The group will check the papers and, if needed, investigate. If eligible, the group will send medals to the local organization to give out. Usually only one medal is given to a family. It goes to the family member who donated or, for a deceased donor, to the family member who signed or otherwise gave permission. If more than one person in the same family donated organs, a medal may be given for each donor.
