§280g–7a Surveillance of Neurological Diseases

Title 42 › Chapter 6A— PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › Subchapter II— GENERAL POWERS AND DUTIES › Part P— Additional Programs › § 280g–7a

Summary

Create a national system called the National Neurological Conditions Surveillance System to track and study brain and nerve diseases. The Secretary of Health and Human Services, working through the CDC and other agencies, must build and expand the tools and work needed to follow how often these diseases happen and spread. The system must help research and may include a registry. It must collect and store data on how many people get these diseases and how common they are, and, when possible, other information from people who agree to join, like basic demographics, possible genetic or environmental risks, diagnosis and disease progression, and other data useful for learning about natural history, prevention, care, treatment, and measuring outcomes. The Secretary must consult experts (epidemiologists, patient groups, health IT specialists, clinicians, and researchers) and may start with a limited set of conditions. Grants and contracts may be used to do the work. Data and analysis must be shared with federal, state, and local agencies and, when appropriate and allowed by federal and state law, made available to the public and researchers while protecting privacy. An interim report is due within 1 year after a system is set up to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee and must be posted online and updated every two years. A report to Congress was required not later than 4 years after December 13, 2016. Up to $5,000,000 is authorized for each fiscal year 2018 through 2022.
