The Director of the National Institutes of Health must, not later than 2 years after December 13, 2016, create policies for NIH-funded basic research to consider biological factors, including sex, and guide how to study male–female differences in cells, tissues, animals. The Director may update the policies and must consult the Office of Research on Women’s Health, the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, scientists and academics, solicit feedback on when to include sexes. The Director must ensure funded projects follow them and should encourage reporting results by sex as appropriate.
