Title 42 › CHAPTER 6A — PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › SUBCHAPTER III — NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES › Part C — Specific Provisions Respecting National Research Institutes › subpart 1 — national cancer institute › § 285a–9
The Secretary can give competitive grants, through the Health Resources and Services Administration and with advice from the National Institutes of Health and the Indian Health Service, to certain entities. Entities include National Cancer Institute–designated cancer centers; Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals or medical centers; Federally Qualified Health Centers, community health centers, or hospitals; state or local government agencies (including state health departments); and nonprofit organizations. Grants may be used to screen the individuals named in section 4(a)(1)(A)(i) or 5(a)(1)(A) of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (42 U.S.C. 2210 note) for cancer, provide referrals and follow-up care, create and share public education about detecting, preventing, and treating radiogenic cancers and diseases, and help people gather documents for claims under section 5(a) of that Act. Programs must include services delivered through the Indian Health Service or tribal agreements that raise the health of Indians. Grant recipients may spend the funds to do these activities. This law does not change any insurance or government health plan obligations to cover care for people who are referred.
