§285b–9 Hhs Valvular Heart Disease Activities

Summary

The Health and Human Services Secretary must keep supporting research, education, and public awareness about heart valve (valvular) diseases. The National Institutes of Health may fund or do research. That research can use advanced imaging, study risk factors for sudden cardiac arrest or sudden cardiac death, and do other work to improve knowledge. Not later than 2 years after December 20, 2022, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute must, as appropriate, hold a workshop with experts and stakeholders to find research gaps and make recommendations on identifying and treating people with mitral valve prolapse, including those who might be at risk for sudden cardiac arrest or death. The Secretary may run or fund programs to teach the public and providers to help reduce sudden deaths from valve disease. Grants, contracts, and technical help may be used. Work may include CDC activities, public education about risks and symptoms, and better data on cardiac arrests (including those outside hospitals). Priority may be given to projects serving the most affected groups. The Secretary must coordinate with other HHS offices and share best practices with health care providers. Up to $28,000,000 is authorized for each of fiscal years 2023 through 2027.
