§285b–9 Hhs Valvular Heart Disease Activities

Summary

The Secretary of Health and Human Services must keep supporting research, education, and public awareness about valvular heart diseases. The National Institutes of Health may fund or do research on these diseases, including using advanced imaging, studying what raises the risk of sudden cardiac arrest or sudden cardiac death, and other work to fill knowledge gaps. The Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute must, as appropriate, hold a workshop of experts and stakeholders to find research needs and make care recommendations for mitral valve prolapse not later than 2 years after December 20, 2022. The Secretary may run or fund programs to teach people about valvular heart disease and reduce sudden cardiac deaths. Grants or contracts can go to public or nonprofit groups, and the Secretary can give technical help. Projects may include continuing CDC efforts, raising public awareness of risks and symptoms, and improving data on cardiac arrests, including those outside hospitals. The Secretary may give grant priority to groups most affected, must coordinate with other HHS offices, and should share best practices. Up to $28,000,000 is authorized for each of fiscal years 2023 through 2027.
