Title 42 › Chapter 6A— PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › Subchapter III— NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES › Part C— Specific Provisions Respecting National Research Institutes › Subpart 5— national institute on aging › § 285e–3
The Institute director must fund and help set up at least 10 centers called Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Centers. The director will give grants and cooperative agreements to public and private nonprofit groups. Each center must be based at one school or be a group of schools that meet the director’s rules. Centers must do research on aging (including menopause), find treatments and devices that help people avoid long hospital stays or nursing homes, and run programs to train new researchers. The director should place centers fairly across U.S. regions when possible. "Independence" here means the ability to do daily tasks and everyday activities without help.
