Title 42 › Chapter 6A— PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › Subchapter III— NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES › Part C— Specific Provisions Respecting National Research Institutes › Subpart 9— national eye institute › § 285i–1
The Director of the Institute may give research grants to one or more Diabetes Eye Research Institutions. The grants support clinical and health programs with four goals: offer full eye care for people with diabetes, develop better patient care methods through research, help move new research into everyday medical practice, and expand knowledge about the eye and diabetes by supporting more studies. Grant money must be used for four main kinds of work: finding the biochemical, cellular, and genetic causes of diabetic eye disease and spotting early problems (and training ophthalmologists in modern molecular and cell biology methods); building new technologies like video-based diagnostic tools to improve care, study retinal function and its effect on diabetes, and assess risks and treatments; turning vision research into better patient care using clinical and lab resources; and studying how well treatments and education programs work, including regional evaluations. Grants may also pay for needed equipment.
