Title 42 › Chapter 6A— PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › Subchapter III— NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES › Part C— Specific Provisions Respecting National Research Institutes › Subpart 11— national institute of general medical sciences › § 285k
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences supports and runs research, training, health information, and other programs in basic medical science and related natural or behavioral sciences that matter to two or more other national research institutes or that do not fit under any other institute. It focuses on broad, basic science that helps many parts of medical research. The NIH Director, through the NIGMS Director, must set up a program to help research organizations in States that have had a historically low success rate getting national research institute funds become more competitive. That help can include technical aid with grant applications, help making research plans, and help carrying out those plans. The NIH Director must also start a program to support research projects led by people who have not before been principal researchers on projects funded by the Director.
