§290aa–2a Report on Individuals with Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Abuse Disorders

Summary

By October 17, 2002, the Secretary must prepare and send a report about prevention and treatment for people who have both a mental illness and a substance abuse problem. Before writing the report, the Secretary must talk with state groups, mental health and substance abuse treatment providers, prevention experts, people getting treatment, and their family members. The report must go to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and the House Committee on Commerce. The report must use data from existing Federal and State surveys. It must say how people are getting treatment, give current counts of children and adults with both problems and explain how funds under sections 300x and 300x–21 of this title are being used and how many are served, list needed improvements, describe ways to prevent substance abuse in people with mental illness, and summarize evidence-based treatments and how to put them into practice. The Secretary may use available appropriations to do this.
