§290bb–39 Peer-supported Mental Health Services

Summary

The Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use will give grants to eligible groups so they can start, grow, and improve peer-delivered mental health services. Grants can fund national, state, or local programs, including virtual peer support and technology. Money can be used for training and keeping peer providers, linking peer networks with treatment and other supports, fighting mental health stigma, improving virtual services and equipment, and research on signs of mental illness and the resources available to people and families and how peer support helps resilience. Priority must be given to the special needs of rural areas. Eligible groups are (1) consumer-run nonprofits led by people with mental health conditions that mobilize resources to support long-term wellness (including for co-occurring substance use), and (2) Indian Tribes, Tribal organizations, Urban Indian organizations, or their consortia. The law authorizes $13,000,000 for each fiscal year 2023 through 2027.
