§290ee–6 Regional Centers of Excellence in Substance Use Disorder Education

Summary

The Secretary must give cooperative agreements to qualified organizations to name them Regional Centers of Excellence in Substance Use Disorder Education. These centers will help improve training for health workers on preventing, treating, and supporting recovery from substance use disorders. Eligible groups are accredited educators of health professions, such as teaching hospitals, medical schools, certified behavioral health clinics, public health schools, or Cooperative Extension Programs at colleges that work on substance use disorder prevention, treatment, or recovery. Applicants must show community partnerships and submit the information the Secretary asks for. The Secretary must consider regional differences and try to spread awards around the country. Awarded centers must create, test, and share evidence-based training materials about substance use disorders. Topics include brain effects and disease, new treatments, recovery methods, prevention and care across different patient groups, and other related subjects. The Secretary will evaluate each project and share the results with public and private groups. Funding authorized is $4,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2019 through 2023.
