§290ee–6 Regional Centers of Excellence in Substance Use Disorder Education

Summary

The Secretary must give cooperative agreements to qualified groups to create regional centers that improve how health professionals are trained about preventing, treating, and recovering from substance use disorders. The Secretary will work with other federal agencies and try to spread centers across different regions. Eligible groups must be accredited educators that train health workers, such as teaching hospitals, medical schools, certified behavioral health clinics, or other health professions schools and Cooperative Extension Programs. They must show local partnerships with community groups and health and safety partners and submit an application. Funded centers must make, test, and share evidence-based training materials on topics like the brain effects of addiction, new treatments, recovery practices, prevention and treatment strategies for different patients, and other related subjects. The Secretary must evaluate each project and share the results. Congress authorized $4,000,000 per year for fiscal years 2019 through 2023.
