§293l–1 Teaching Health Centers Development Grants

Summary

The Secretary of Health and Human Services may give grants to teaching health centers to start or expand accredited primary care residency programs. Grants can last up to 3 years and be no more than $500,000. Money can pay for startup and expansion costs like making curriculum, recruiting, training, and keeping residents and faculty, paying faculty during the development phase, covering accreditation costs (ACGME, ADA, or AOA), and paying for technical help from qualified organizations. Teaching health centers must apply to the Secretary in the way and at the time the Secretary requires. Applications that show an existing agreement with an area health education center program get preference. Definitions: Eligible entity — an organization that can give technical help, including an area health education center. Primary care residency program — an approved graduate medical training program in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine–pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, or geriatrics. Teaching health center — a community-based, outpatient care center that runs a primary care residency; this includes federally qualified health centers, community mental health centers, rural health clinics, Indian Health Service/tribal/urban Indian health centers, and certain other funded entities. Funding: $25,000,000 was authorized for FY2010, $50,000,000 for FY2011, $50,000,000 for FY2012, and such sums as needed after that. Up to $5,000,000 each year may be used for technical assistance grants.
