Title 42 › CHAPTER 6A — PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › SUBCHAPTER X — TRAUMA CARE › Part D — Trauma Centers Operating in Areas Severely Affected by Drug-Related Violence › § 300d–44
The Secretary can only give a trauma center a grant if the center sends an application in the required form and gives the agreements, promises, and information the Secretary asks for. Emergency grant payments are limited to 3 fiscal years, though the Secretary can allow one extra year. No grant can be more than $2,000,000 in a fiscal year. Getting this grant does not normally stop a center from getting other grants, except as a separate rule says. Each year’s money is split so 70% goes to big uncompensated-care awards, 20% to core mission awards, and 10% to emergency awards. If less than $25,000,000 is available, all funds go to uncompensated-care awards. Of those uncompensated-care funds, 50% go to category A centers, 35% to B, and 15% to C, and money within each group is given out based on a preset formula. Starting March 23, 2012, and every two years after, the Secretary must report to Congress on the grants and the financial health of trauma centers.
