§300j–19d Review of Technologies

Summary

The Administrator must review current and new methods, tools, equipment, and technologies — and can hire others or make agreements to do the work — after talking with federal, state, and local governments and relevant agencies. The review must look at cost, availability, and how well things work. It must cover ways to keep community water systems physically sound; to prevent, detect, and respond to contaminants that are covered by national drinking water rules in community systems and their source water; to use alternate drinking water from nontraditional sources; and to help assess and protect source water. The review should include things like corrosion control, metering, leak detection, and protection against water loss; smart systems (hardware and software) that help with those tasks; point-of-use and point-of-entry devices; physical or electronic systems that monitor contaminants in real time; and technologies for using nontraditional sources, including physical separation and chemical or biological treatment. The Administrator must make the results public. Congress authorized $10,000,000 for fiscal year 2019 for this work, and that money remains available until spent.
