Title 42 › CHAPTER 6A — PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › SUBCHAPTER XII — SAFETY OF PUBLIC WATER SYSTEMS › Part E — General Provisions › § 300j–3a
The EPA must give grants to public agencies to help create and test new or better ways to provide safe drinking water. Grants can also fund projects that study reclaiming, recycling, and reusing wastewater for drinking or farming, and the methods to make that water safe. Building demonstration projects is allowed. Grants can cover up to 66⅔% of building costs and up to 75% of other costs. Any project that builds or changes a public water system must be approved by the state's drinking water safety agency or, if there is none, the state health authority. The EPA must, after consulting, decide the project will help develop or demonstrate new techniques for safe drinking water. Congress authorized $25,000,000 for these grants for fiscal year 1978.
