Title 42 › CHAPTER 65 — NOISE CONTROL › § 4904
The Administrator must, after consulting other federal agencies, create and publish noise criteria within nine months of October 27, 1972 that reflect the best scientific knowledge about how different kinds and amounts of noise can affect public health and welfare. Within twelve months of October 27, 1972 the Administrator must also publish what levels of environmental noise are needed in particular areas and conditions to protect health and welfare with an adequate safety margin. The Administrator must also prepare and publish reports that identify products or product classes that are major noise sources and that explain ways to control that noise, including available technology, costs, and alternative methods. The first of these reports must be issued no later than eighteen months after October 27, 1972. The Administrator must review and update these criteria and reports as needed. Any report naming major noise sources must be published in the Federal Register, and notices or revisions about criteria or control information must be announced there and made available to the public.
