Title 42 › CHAPTER 77 — ENERGY CONSERVATION › SUBCHAPTER III — IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY › Part H — Encouraging Use of Alternative Fuels › § 6374e
Federal agencies must cut how much petroleum they use and use more alternative fuels every year. No later than 18 months after December 19, 2007, the Secretary must make rules so that starting in fiscal year 2010 each agency works toward the goals. By October 1, 2015, and every year after, each agency must reach at least a 20% cut in annual petroleum use and a 10% rise in annual alternative fuel use, measured from the fiscal year 2005 baseline. The Secretary must set interim numeric milestones and require agencies to report each year on progress. The rules must also make each agency write and follow a plan with dates. The plan must list the specific actions and show how much fuel change each action will make each year. Allowed actions include using alternative fuels; buying higher‑mileage vehicles (for example hybrids, electric, plug‑in, neighborhood electric if sold commercially); switching cars for light trucks; carrying more per trip; driving fewer miles; shrinking the fleet; and other steps.
