Title 42 › CHAPTER 82 — SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL › SUBCHAPTER III — HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT › § 6937
Each federal agency must keep an ongoing list of every site it owns, runs, or used where hazardous waste was stored, treated, or dumped. The agency must send that inventory to the EPA and, for sites in States with an authorized hazardous waste program, to the State. The inventory must be updated and sent every two years, starting January 31, 1986, and must be made available to the public as the law requires. Agencies do not have to resend material already sent under other related laws, but they must update any prior submissions with the newest data. The inventory must cover eight kinds of facts, including site location and nearby water, how much and what kind of waste and its toxicity, known contamination and monitoring results, current site status and dates, sites without monitoring and why, cleanup actions planned or done, treatment/storage/disposal methods used, and the site’s name, address, and responsible agency. If EPA thinks an agency is not giving enough information, EPA will warn the agency. If the agency does not start an adequate program within 90 days, EPA will make the inventory for that agency.
