Title 42 › CHAPTER 84 — DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY › SUBCHAPTER II — ESTABLISHMENT OF DEPARTMENT › § 7142
The Department of Energy museum at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque is officially named the National Atomic Museum and has the sole right to use that name across the United States and its territories. The Secretary of Energy may recruit unpaid volunteers to help run the museum and can give them small incidental items or reimbursements like awards, uniforms, or travel. Volunteers are not treated like federal employees for pay, hours, leave, unemployment, or benefits, but they are treated as federal employees for legal claims against the government and for federal workers’ compensation for job injuries. The Secretary may accept donations meant for the museum, run a gift shop selling museum-related items, and show or publish museum materials anywhere, charging reasonable fees to cover costs. Money earned from the shop and publications can be used by the museum. The Nevada museum in Las Vegas run by the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation is officially the National Atomic Testing Museum.
