Title 42 › CHAPTER 86 — EARTHQUAKE HAZARDS REDUCTION › § 7709
The Director of the U.S. Geological Survey must create a Scientific Earthquake Studies Advisory Committee. The Director will set rules to pick up to 10 members who are not federal employees. Members must be experts in earthquakes or related fields and chosen only for proven, distinguished work. One member will be the chair. The Director must try to get recommendations from the National Academy of Sciences, professional societies, and similar groups. The chair and Director decide when and where the committee meets. The committee must advise the Director about the USGS role in the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program, including goals, research needs, capabilities, how to meet major objectives, and how to measure performance. The committee must send a yearly report to the Director for Congress on or before September 30 each year that describes its work and policy issues affecting USGS participation in the program.
