§1629f Claims Arising From Contamination of Transferred Lands

Summary

The Secretary must, within 18 months of November 2, 1995, and after talking with the Secretary of Agriculture, the State of Alaska, and appropriate Alaska Native Corporations and organizations, send a report to the Committee on Resources of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the Senate. The report must look at problems from contamination on lands that have been or are planned to be transferred to Alaska Native Corporations under this law. Contaminant means a hazardous substance that can harm people or the environment, including friable asbestos. The report must summarize existing information about what kinds of contaminants were on the lands before transfer, identify who might be responsible for cleanup as far as possible, describe current cleanup methods, recommend any new laws needed, and point out buildings known to have asbestos plus advice to help Native landowners contain it.
