The Secretary of the Interior can give a land patent in New Mexico for up to 160 acres of public, non‑mineral land when a U.S. citizen (or their ancestors or grantors) has honestly and peacefully held the land for more than twenty years under a claim that looked like legal title. The person must have made valuable improvements or farmed part of the land and must pay $1.25 per acre. If a person holds more than 160 acres, the Secretary can choose which 160 acres to patent.
