Defines key words used in this chapter. Embedded means stuck fast in the underwater ground or coral so you must dig or use tools to move the bottom sediment to reach a shipwreck or its cargo. National Register means the National Register of Historic Places kept by the Secretary of the Interior under section 101 of the National Historic Preservation Act (16 U.S.C. 470a). Public lands, Indian lands, and Indian tribe mean the same things they do in the Archaeological Resource Protection Act of 1979 (16 U.S.C. 470aa–470ll). Shipwreck means a vessel or wreck and its cargo and other contents. State includes any State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Submerged lands means lands under navigable waters (see section 1301 of this title) and the lands of Puerto Rico (section 749, title 48), Guam, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa (section 1705, title 48), and the Northern Mariana Islands (section 801 of Public Law 94–241).
