Title 43 › Chapter 46— GEOSPATIAL DATA › § 2805
The Committee must pick and name the main national geospatial data themes. These themes are the big topics for digital map and location data that help the federal government and the public. Each theme includes datasets with coordinates and attribute records that are documented, checkable, meet agreed standards, can be shared, and can be used to make other datasets. For each theme the Committee must pick one or more lead agencies to manage it. Lead agencies must run the data, people, technology, and services for the theme. They must lead work on standards (review what exists, find gaps, and make a plan to create and use needed standards with community and international input, following Office of Management and Budget Circular A–119). They must make a nationwide plan to build the data (including partnerships with states, tribes, schools, businesses, other agencies, and local governments), set goals that match the national plan, gather user needs, and report progress. Leads must name a contact person, send an annual performance report, post maps online showing status, encourage data providers to share data on the GeoPlatform, work with the GeoPlatform, and publish proven uses of the data.
