Title 43 › Chapter 2— UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY › § 38
Surveyors must mark elevation above a local base with iron or stone posts or permanent benchmarks in topographic surveys. West of the ninety-fifth meridian place two markers in each township-sized area (one in forested or mountain areas), near township corners when possible; east of it place one marker.
