Title 45 › Chapter 20— NORTHEAST RAIL SERVICE › § 1113
After January 1, 1983, Conrail will not have to provide crews for intercity passenger trains on the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak, Amtrak Commuter, Conrail, and employees who have seniority in both freight and passenger work must begin talks within 120 days after August 13, 1981, about letting those employees switch between services once every six months. The agreement must allow one furlough in the same job class for each employee who returns. If they cannot agree within 360 days, the matter goes to binding arbitration. Conrail workers who lose their jobs because Amtrak takes over or stops intercity passenger service are eligible for employee protection benefits under section 797 of this title, even if other rules or agreements would normally block them or if they otherwise would not qualify. Those benefits are the only protection for such affected Conrail employees.
