Title 45 › Chapter 21— ALASKA RAILROAD TRANSFER › § 1201
The federal government should offer to transfer the Alaska Railroad to the State of Alaska. The railroad was built by the federal government to help develop the Alaska Territory and now mostly serves Alaska residents and businesses. Many communities depend on it for freight and passenger service, so it is an essential public service. Keeping and growing those services helps federal, state, and private goals, but federal control and payments are no longer needed. Turning the railroad over to the State follows past transfers of transportation functions and will let Alaska run and expand the railroad while saving federal money.
