Title 46 › Subtitle Subtitle II— Vessels and Seamen › Part A— General Provisions › Chapter 21— GENERAL › § 2117
An authorized enforcement officer can take three actions to keep people safe on a vessel. They can take away a boat’s required certificate if the boat is being run in a way that doesn’t follow that certificate. They can order the person in charge of a boat without the required certificate to return to a mooring and stay there until the boat meets the rules. If the officer sees the boat being operated in an especially dangerous way, they can tell the person in charge to take immediate, reasonable safety steps, including returning to a mooring and staying there until the danger is fixed or ends.
