When a shipper asks, a carrier must give a bill of lading or a shipping document. It must list three things — marks to identify the goods, the number of packages or the quantity/weight and whether the carrier or the shipper measured it, and the goods’ apparent condition — and the document is initial proof that the carrier received the goods.
