Sailing school instructor — a teacher on a sailing school vessel. Sailing school student — a learner on that vessel. Sailing school vessel — a boat used for sailing instruction, as defined in section 2101. Students and instructors are not treated as seamen under parts B, F, and G of subtitle II, and they are not covered by the maritime rules called maintenance and cure or warranty of seaworthiness. A sailing school vessel is not treated as a merchant vessel under section 11101(a)–(c) and is not a vessel engaged in trade or commerce. The owner or charterer must keep proof they can pay for death or injury to students and instructors on a voyage. That proof can be insurance or other funds, and must cover at least $50,000 for each student and instructor.
