§51326 Student Advisory Board at the United States Merchant Marine Academy

Summary

The Maritime Administrator must set up a student advisory board at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy called the Advisory Board to the Secretary of Transportation. The board must have at least 12 midshipmen who are enrolled at the Academy, with at least 3 students from each class. Members are picked by the Maritime Administrator within 60 days after a new class is sworn in. Each member serves one academic year. Up to 6 students from the prior year may be reappointed for one more year if the Maritime Administrator thinks it helps the Academy. The board must meet the Secretary of Transportation at least once each academic year and meet in person with the Maritime Administrator at least twice each year. The board must find and discuss problems facing students (for example health and well‑being, diversity, and sexual assault or harassment on campus, off campus, or during Sea Year), suggest fixes including culture and leadership improvements, and review the program in section 51325(b) when needed. It may form working groups that include other midshipmen. The board must regularly give reports and briefings to the Secretary and the Maritime Administrator, in writing or in person.
