A U.S.-owned ship must take on board U.S. government bullion, coins, paper money, bonds, or other government financial papers when a government agency, consular officer, or agent offers them, before the ship is cleared to sail on trips between U.S. and U.S. ports or between U.S. and foreign ports. The ship must carry them safely and deliver them quickly to the proper authorities or consignees at the destination. The operator must be paid the same amount other carriers normally receive for similar services.
