The Secretary who runs the Coast Guard can extend or reissue expiring mariner credentials. For licenses or certificates under chapter 71 and for merchant mariner documents under chapter 73, the Secretary may extend a credential up to 1 year to help clear application backlogs or during a national emergency or natural disaster. Or the Secretary may reissue a credential up to 5 years only to make its expiration date match the holder’s other credential. Extensions can cover one person or a specifically named group. If a credential is renewed (not extended), the new credential begins the day after the old one expires.
