U.S.-flagged ships that use the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) do not have to carry a radio telegraphy station run by radio officers or operators. Each ship gets this exemption only after the U.S. Coast Guard verifies the required GMDSS equipment is installed and working.
