Title 48 › Chapter 17— NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS › Subchapter II— JUDICIAL MATTERS › § 1822
The District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands must have the same powers as any U.S. district court. That includes hearing diversity cases under 28 U.S.C. 1332 and serving as a bankruptcy court. The court must also hear local cases that are not covered by subsection (a) when the Northern Mariana Islands courts do not have authority. If a case is in federal court only for that reason, the federal court is treated like a Northern Mariana Islands court for grand jury indictments and jury trials.
