Title 48 › Chapter 3— HAWAII › § 206
Within 120 days after the law became effective (Nov. 2, 1995), the Secretary of the Interior must pick someone from inside the Department to carry out the United States’ duties under this title and the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act. If the Secretary does not make that pick by then, or if the job becomes vacant later, the Assistant Secretary for Policy, Budget, and Administration of the Department of the Interior will take on those duties. That person must work to protect and advance the interests of the beneficiaries (the people the laws are meant to help). They must also help the beneficiaries and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands get support from Interior Department programs and other federal agencies to promote homesteading opportunities, economic self-sufficiency, and social well-being.
