§30129 Crash Avoidance Technology

Summary

The Secretary of Transportation must make a rule that sets minimum safety standards for crash-avoidance technology. The rule must require that every passenger vehicle made for sale in the United States on or after the rule’s compliance date have two systems: a forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and a lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist. The forward system must warn the driver when they are closing too fast on a vehicle or object and a crash is likely, and it must apply the brakes if the driver does not. The lane system must warn the driver if they drift out of their lane and correct the vehicle’s course if the driver fails to do so. The Secretary will set the exact effective date and any phase-in schedule.
