Title 49 › Subtitle SUBTITLE VI— MOTOR VEHICLE AND DRIVER PROGRAMS › Part A— GENERAL › Chapter 301— MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY › Subchapter II— STANDARDS AND COMPLIANCE › § 30129
The Secretary of Transportation must create a rule that sets basic performance rules for crash-avoidance tech and requires that every passenger car made for sale in the United States on or after the rule’s start date have two safety systems. One system must warn the driver and automatically brake if the car is closing on something ahead and a crash is likely. The other must warn the driver about leaving the lane and steer the car back if the driver does not. The Secretary will pick the rule’s start date and can phase in the requirements over time.
