§31114 Access to the Interstate System

Summary

States may not pass or enforce rules that block commercial motor vehicles covered by this part of the law from having a reasonable way to travel between the Dwight D. Eisenhower Interstate System (except parts exempted under 31111(f) or 31113(e)) and other qualifying Federal-aid Primary System highways the Secretary of Transportation names, and between those highways and places like terminals, food, fuel, repair and rest stops, and loading or unloading points for certain carriers (including household goods, passenger carriers, towaway trailer transporters, and certain tractor‑semitrailer combos). States and local governments may still place reasonable safety-based limits on truck tractor‑semitrailer combinations whose semitrailer is not more than 28.5 feet and that generally operate as part of the vehicle combinations described in 31111(c).
