It is illegal to advertise, sell, install, or use any device that makes a car’s odometer show different miles than it actually recorded, beyond the error range the odometer’s maker allows. It is also illegal to disconnect, reset, or change an odometer to alter mileage, to drive knowing the odometer is not working to defraud someone, or to plan with others to do any of these things.
