Title 49 › Subtitle SUBTITLE I— DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION › Chapter 3— GENERAL DUTIES AND POWERS › Subchapter II— ADMINISTRATIVE › § 331
The Secretary of Transportation may provide needed services and supplies for DOT officers, employees, and their dependents who are posted in remote places when nothing else is available. It covers six types of support, including emergency medical care and supplies; food and mess services; recreation/training equipment; living and work quarters; and reimbursement when an employee buys emergency items for people in distress. The Secretary must set fair charges for medical care, food, and mess services and credit the money to the same appropriation. If aviation funds are not approved by June 1 immediately before a fiscal year, the Secretary may authorize an officer to buy and ship supplies to locations outside the 48 contiguous States and the District of Columbia, obligating no more than 75 percent of the amount available for those supplies that year. Payments are made from the next fiscal year’s appropriations when available.
