Title 49 › Subtitle SUBTITLE I— DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION › Chapter 5— SPECIAL AUTHORITY › Subchapter II— PENALTIES › § 523
Motor carriers and their officers, employees, or anyone the carrier lets get its shipment information must not knowingly share details about what is being shipped, how much, where it’s going, who will get it, or the route with anyone else (except the shipper or consignee) unless the shipper or consignee agrees and the information could harm the shipper or reveal its business to a competitor. People also may not ask for or knowingly take that information. The rule does not stop carriers from giving information when a U.S. or state court orders it, to government officers or agents, or to another carrier or its agent to settle normal billing between carriers. An employee the Secretary of Transportation sends to inspect under section 504 who knowingly reveals information from that inspection, unless the Secretary, a court, or a judge allows it, can be fined up to $500, jailed up to 6 months, or both.
