The President appoints the Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs, and the Senate must confirm the appointment. Under the Administrator’s direction, the Deputy Administrator must carry out assigned duties, especially keeping the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile reliable, safe, and effective — including the ability to design, build, and test weapons when needed for national security — and must run and oversee the weapons production plants and the national security laboratories.
