A covered intelligence officer is either a U.S. intelligence officer serving in another country or a known or suspected foreign intelligence officer working at a U.S. post. The Director of National Intelligence, after talking with the Secretary of State, must tell the congressional intelligence committees, the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs within 72 hours after the officer is declared persona non grata. The notice must give the date, the reason for the designation, and the justification for the expulsion.
