Summary

Heads of six intelligence agencies must pick a senior official to be their chief technology officer. The agencies are the CIA, DIA, FBI, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, and National Reconnaissance Office. The CTO must help the head choose and use technology to meet mission needs. A CTO must not also serve as the chief information officer, chief data officer, or principal science officer for any intelligence element.

(a)Designation authority

The head of each covered element of the intelligence community shall designate a senior official to serve as the chief technology officer of such element.

(b)Covered elements

For purposes of this section, the covered elements of the intelligence community are the following:

(1)The Central Intelligence Agency.

(2)The Defense Intelligence Agency.

(3)The Federal Bureau of Investigation.

(4)The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

(5)The National Security Agency.

(6)The National Reconnaissance Office.

(c)Responsibility

The chief technology officer of each covered element of the intelligence community shall be responsible for assisting the head of such element in the identification and adoption of technology to advance mission needs.

(d)Prohibition of dual appointment

Any chief technology officer designated pursuant to subsection (a) may not concurrently serve as the chief information officer, the chief data officer, or the principal science officer of any element of the intelligence community.
