The Director of National Intelligence, using the Director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), can start or run a research and development program about 6G or later wireless tech. The work must only focus on possible uses of 6G (or successor tech) for the intelligence community or other national security purposes. The Director must consult and coordinate with relevant federal department and agency heads (including the Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration), interagency bodies (such as the Committee for the Assessment of Foreign Participation in the United States Telecommunications Sector), private companies, colleges, federally funded research centers, and any other people or groups the Director finds appropriate. "6G technology" means hardware, software, or other technologies for sixth‑generation wireless networks.
