Defines key words used in this chapter. Atomic energy is the energy released by nuclear fission or other nuclear change. Atomic weapon is any device that uses that energy and is mainly meant to be a weapon, a weapon prototype, or a test device; separable transport or propulsion parts are not counted. Special nuclear material means plutonium, uranium enriched in isotopes 233 or 235, or any other material later declared so under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954. United States, in a geographic sense, includes Puerto Rico, all U.S. Territories and possessions, and the Canal Zone; but for section 47c it has the meaning given in the Immigration and Nationality Act.
