Last updated Apr 5, 2026|Official source

Summary

If someone willfully breaks a security rule for Department of Defense or NASA property, they can be fined under Title 18, put in prison for not more than one year, or both. A covered security rule is one made or approved by the Secretary of Defense (or a military or senior DoD official they name) to protect DoD property, or one made or approved by the NASA Administrator to protect NASA property. These rules deal with things like fire risks, lighting, machines, guards, unsafe or unused conditions, who can enter or leave, and ways to protect property from accidents, enemy action, sabotage, or other harmful acts. Covered property means things like aircraft, airports and airport facilities, ships, ports, piers, bases, forts, posts, labs, stations, vehicles, equipment, explosives, and similar places or items. A "regulation" also includes an order. Any such rule or order must be posted where people can see it.
