Title 52 › Subtitle Subtitle I— Voting Rights › Chapter 107— RIGHT TO VOTE AT AGE EIGHTEEN › § 10701
The Attorney General must bring lawsuits in the name of the United States against states or local governments when needed to enforce the Twenty-Sixth Amendment. These suits can ask federal courts for orders to stop or prevent violations. Federal district courts hear these cases with a three-judge panel, appeals go to the Supreme Court, and the judges must schedule and decide the cases quickly. Anyone who denies or tries to deny a person’s rights under the Twenty-Sixth Amendment can be fined up to $5,000, jailed for up to five years, or both.
