The President, with the Senate’s approval, appoints a Director to lead the Service. The Director must have strong experience in land management and in protecting natural or cultural resources. Under the Secretary’s direction, the Director runs the System units and may work with the Agriculture Secretary when units border national forests. The Director chooses 2 Deputy Directors (one for operations and one for other programs). Congress pays for other officers and staff.
